Liming and Fertilizing ponds are two critical pieces of effective pond management. In the south, some of the most productive trophy fishing ponds reach that status by maintaining good water quality and maximizing fish growth and production through proper fertilization. The key water quality component we are concerned with when liming and fertilizing a pond is Alkalinity. Alkalinity is the measure of bases in the water that help neutralize acids. If the soils in your region are extremely acidic, the water in your ponds may be acidic as well. Maintaining an alkalinity level above 20 ppm prevents phosphorus from binding up with metals in the soil, allowing necessary phytoplankton growth from proper fertilization.
